I heard on the news today that MySpace.com is launching a from-the-people type of news service that will aggregate articles from web sites like AskBlax.com. Basically, Fox/Murdock is going for the news from the average Joe’s perspective. MySpace doesn’t mention any cultural expressions, so I guess news from the African-American perspective will get lumped in with the Imus’s sister’s point of view.
Does that sit well with you? I, personally, am fine with it because I consider news reported from the African-American perspective as an inclusive source rather than exclusive. I believe African-Americans can report what is seen just like everybody else. I can agree with the opinion of the writer or I can disagree. Most of us are opinionated, but what human author isn’t?
As African-Americans not blind to opportunity, why not use the new MySpace news channel as a way to get our own perspective out to others? MySpace has planned the usual categories for news reporting for writers to contribute articles. Maybe some news from the Black perspective could probably fit into those categories. Maybe not. That will be for you, as a writer, to decide.
MySpace, like MSN, will allow users to rate the articles contributed just like they allow members to rate other members blogs and personal web pages. You won’t earn anything tangible for contributing your articles to MySpace. That has always been the same as the setup here at AskBlax.com except that AskBlax.com has a goal to reach and motivate African-Americans to write.
Who’s community do you want to hear from to get the truth? Which communities can offer news content that helps to shape yours? Rather than the rate and dominate approach, isn’t it refreshing to read and write for the AskBlax.com community and know that others either feel your pain or appreciate your gain?
